What is the Latex convention for sign function?

What is the correct type for sign(x)(signum function)? I'm using:

\documentclass[journal,transmag]{IEEEtran} 
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amssymb}    
\newcommand{\sign}{\text{sign}}

Is that correct or should I be using "sgn" instead?
