How to develop animations with animate package without interruptive lock files

At present, my favorite method for including animations in PDF documents from LaTeX is to use the animate package. However, Sumatra and Preview (my two goto pdf viewers) cannot show the animations.

Then to develop animations, I must open the file in Adobe Reader, see if I like how it turned out, then close adobe reader (and often on windows, delete a lock file) before compiling again. This is very annoying, so I ask:

Can Adobe Reader be adjusted so that it won't place lock files?

Is there another reader that can show animate animations?
